ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen police and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department have both overspent their overtime budgets because of vacancies that force other officers to work extra shifts.

The sheriff’s department has already paid $120,000 in overtime this year, $40,000 more than its overtime budget for all of 2007.

Police have paid nearly $120,000 in overtime for patrols, compared with a budget of just under $100,000.

Acting Police Chief Richard Pryor says his department will likely come in under budget overall because of savings from the vacancies.

The police department has lost nine officers this year. The sheriff’s office has lost five employees.
