Meredith Hollen, charged with 12 counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, showed up in court today to be advised of the charges and a restraining order to stay 100 feet away from the alleged victim, court personnel said.
Hollen, 40, is accused of assaulting a student from Graland Country Day School in Denver, where she use to teach, but all of the documents in the case have been sealed, and details of the alleged assaults have not been released.
Hollen remains free on a $50,000 bond. Her next court date is set for Dec. 18.
“When all the facts are known in this difficult and complex case, justice will be done,” said Hollen’s defense attorney, Craig Truman.
The alleged incidents occurred during the time when Hollen was employed as a teacher at Graland Country Day School, a prep school for kindergarten through ninth-graders in the Hilltop neighborhood.
According to its website, Graland was started in 1924 and has been at its present location near East First Avenue and Bellaire Street since 1928.
The school has a 7-acre campus and a total enrollment of 638 students. The website lists tuition as running from $15,070 to $16,680 a year.
Denver police say that Hollen had not been teaching at the school this year and that the alleged assault happened before this school year.
Police said they were only recently notified of the allegation.
Police say the student is no longer enrolled there.
In a statement after Hollen’s arrest, school officials said:
“We are surprised and saddened by the allegations of impropriety involving a former Graland faculty member. The school has not been contacted by any law-enforcement agency. We will cooperate in any investigation. The safety of our students continues to be our first concern.”
