GOLDEN — The West Corridor’s end-of-the-line light-rail station and parking facility will take their architectural cue from the Jefferson County government building, commonly known as the “Taj Mahal.” Regional Transportation District officials and consultants discussed other details to be included in a rezoning request to allow for the transit center and parking structure. Because the site is in Golden, the rezoning application must be approved by the city’s planning commission and the City Council. Plans will be submitted to Golden early next year, though construction won’t begin until mid- to late 2009, said Dennis Cole, manager of the 12.1-mile-long light-rail project, slated for completion in 2012.
The parking structure, which would be built into a hill next to U.S. 6, will be two stories with 414 spaces for transit users and 135 for county office visitors. RTD and county officials are trying to find money to build a third level. Still to be determined is the design for fences and about 770 feet of retaining walls.
