COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A jury has convicted a father of trying to kill his 4-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter in a bloody knife attack last year.
Matthew Valverde was found guilty Monday of attempted first-degree murder, assault and child abuse. He could be sentenced to more than 100 years in prison.
Prosecutors said the 46-year-old Valverde attacked his children and tried to kill himself because he was angry his wife was leaving him.
Witnesses testified Valverde was found lying on a blood-soaked waterbed with a knife in his chest. His bleeding children were lying beside him with knife wounds.
Valverde’s lawyer said he was depressed over his marriage and didn’t intend to kill the children.
