SEATTLE—The University of Washington plans to offer electric bikes for students and faculty who need a lift across the Seattle campus.

The university is partnering with a Boulder, Colo., company, Intrago, to provide 40 bikes next fall that can be pedaled or ridden like scooters.

The state Transportation Department is paying $200,000 for the bikes as part of a program to reduce driving.

Users would check out the electric bikes at stations on campus for a fee.
