PROVO, Utah — A couple accused of kidnapping their daughter on the eve of her wedding pleaded guilty to a reduced charge Wednesday, and District Judge James Taylor ordered mental-health professionals to evaluate them for their “clearly irrational” acts.
Julia Redd, 58, and husband Lemuel Redd, 60, pleaded guilty to custodial interference, a misdemeanor.
They had been charged with kidnapping after turning a shopping trip for religious garments with daughter Julianna into a 200-mile-plus drive to Grand Junction and a night in a motel in August 2006.
Julianna and Perry Myers were married at the Mormon temple in Salt Lake City on Aug. 8, 2006, three days later than planned and without the Redds in attendance.
Testifying at an earlier hearing, Julianna Myers said her parents berated her on the drive to Colorado, accusing her of breaking the Old Testament’s Fourth Commandment, which says to honor parents. She said they called her fiance “evil and wicked.”
