Players on guard
What: Player safety
Background: Washington’s Sean Taylor was shot in his home early Monday morning in South Florida. He died Tuesday morning in a hospital. The shooting of Taylor came less than a year after Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in an unsolved murder while riding in a limousine after attending a New Year’s Eve party in downtown Denver.
Williamson’s take: Why are NFL players being gunned down? Of course, there are no answers. But believe this: Players are taking notice, and they are frightened. Williams’ death brought to light player safety, and many players have said they watch what they do in public since the shooting. But for a player to be shot in his home is worse. Some Broncos players have said it makes them wonder whether pro athletes should have security guards. In addition to being another tragedy, the Taylor shooting continues to make players think about their safety and, ultimately, their morality.
THE HOT SEAT
Special teams
Who: The Broncos’ special teams
When: Sunday at the Raiders
Why: The unit was bashed nationally after Chicago star Devin Hester brought back a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in Chicago’s 37-34 overtime win last Sunday. Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun went into the game saying the team would challenge Hester. After playing well for the first five games after the bye, the special teams, which also allowed a crucial blocked punt that sparked the Bears’ comeback, took a step back. For the Broncos to get back to .500 against the Raiders, they’ll need the special teams to forget the Hester experience. But can they?
ROOKIE WATCH
Miller a threat
Who: Oakland Raiders tight end Zach Miller
When: Sunday against the visiting Broncos
Why: The Broncos will face their second straight quality rookie tight end in Miller. He follows Chicago rookie tight end Greg Olsen, who came up with some big catches against Denver. Miller, taken a few spots after Olsen in the April draft, is also a fine pass catcher and is coming along nicely. Miller has 11 catches in the past three games and is a weapon for the offense-hungry Raiders. Denver has struggled at times guarding tight ends, so watch for the Raiders to try to incorporate Miller into the game plan.
