COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Jordan Major threw for a touchdown and ran in another as Berthoud defeated top-ranked Falcon 21-13 Saturday, claiming the Class 3A football state championship in its first appearance in the title game.
The Falcons (13-1), appearing in their first state title game in any sport, led 10-7 after two quick possessions in the second quarter. Raul Franco kicked a 37-yard field goal with 6:27 left in the quarter for the Falcons. On Berthoud’s next possession, Zach Roscoe intercepted Major and returned it 56 yards to the Spartans 11 with 5:33 left. Falcon tailback Keenen Ballage scored on the next play for the lead.
Momentum turned against the Falcons though when a Falcon fumble was recovered with 31 seconds left in the second quarter.
Tenth-seeded Berthoud (12-2) converted the turnover into a touchdown when Major connected on a 27-yard pass on fourth down and 4 to Ty Duncan with four seconds left in the first half for a 14-10 halftime lead.
Bryce Munoz’s 24-yard run with 9:20 left in the game proved decisive for Berthoud.
Major scored on an 8-yard run with 7:02 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 Berthoud lead.
