LAKE LOUISE, Alberta—Lindsey Vonn of the United States won a World Cup downhill Saturday, withstanding temperatures that plunged to 18 below zero.
Vonn, formerly Lindsey Kildow, was followed by Austria’s Renate Goetschl and Canada’s Britt Janyk in a race on the men’s Olympic downhill course.
This was the fourth career downhill victory at Lake Louise for Vonn, who was timed in 1 minute, 48.69 seconds. She married U.S. skier Thomas Vonn in September.
“Everyone has their race hill that they love,” said the 23-year-old, who won her first career race here and has been on the podium seven times. “It’s a certain feeling you get.
“I don’t need any training runs. I feel like every year I could just come here and race right away and do well again.”
American Julia Mancuso was 13th in 1:50.95, and Leanne Smith was 23rd in 1:51.57.
Goetschl finished in 1:49.77 and Janyk was timed at 1:49.96 in her first top-three result on the World Cup circuit.
“I’m speechless,” said Janyk, who received a phone call in the finish area from her brother Mike, who is competing in Europe with the technical team. “I’ve been waiting to get up on the podium so long. It feels really amazing.”
The Canadian women were hoping to match last week’s result when compatriot Jan Hudec won the opening men’s downhill race in Lake Louise.
