He passed on Big Red turmoil, then made Texas toast before deciding to head to Boulder, where Buffaloes roam.
Bryce Givens, a nationally ranked tackle at Mullen High School, had quite the recruiting odyssey before committing Sunday night to the University of Colorado. He informed CU offensive line coach Jeff Grimes, who was driving at the time, but Givens said it didn’t stop Grimes from rolling down a window and yelling to whoever would listen.
Givens, 6-feet-6 and 245 pounds, gave an oral commitment to Nebraska in April. But that was well before the Cornhuskers rotted in the field, then fired their staff at season’s end.
“I wanted to shy away from that,” he said.
A recent trip to Texas nearly made him a Longhorn, but mixed feelings ended during last weekend’s visit to CU, where he got a real glimpse of his future.
Said Givens: “Nobody likes to commit and decommit.” This time, he is “110 percent committed to the Buffs. CU’s on the rise, and I think I can be a person who changes the program and influences it, and has other people who want to jump on board and, hopefully, win a national championship, maybe even go further.”
Color him a recruiting poster boy. He said, “Maybe I can influence the kids in 2009 or 2010 to stay in state, the ones who get national exposure.”
