COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — Prosecutors have filed charges against the wife of a Mexican air force officer accused in a fatal hit-and-run accident on the grounds of the Air Force Academy.

Veronica Prieto-Gudino, 30, faces a felony count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and a misdemeanor count of careless driving causing death. She could face up to six years in prison if convicted of the felony.

Prosecutors filed the charges Thursday.

Prieto-Gudino, a Mexican citizen, is free on a $3,000 bond. Her husband is a language instructor at the academy.

The accident killed Donna Head, 65, of Monument, a civilian employee of the academy who oversaw all child programs there. Her husband, Air Force Brig. Gen. James Head, retired two years ago as a physics professor and vice dean of faculty at the academy.

Prieto-Gudino’s next court date is Feb. 7.
