Aspen/Snowmass is affectionately referring to the record-setting 118 inches in the final month of 2007 as “DEEPcember” after toppling the 1983-84 snowfall tally of 117 inches atop Snowmass Resort. In addition to the nearly 10 feet in December, the resort has close to 3 feet falling in the first week of 2008.
With more than 90 inches of snowfall, Telluride also saw the snowiest December in its history.
Big winners this week included Silverton and Wolf Creek, which received nearly 50 inches of new snow in 72 hours.
Zamansky places. Aspen ski racer Jake Zamansky led the local gate-bashing contingent at the season-opening Super Series races held last week at Sunday River, Maine. The U.S. Ski Team member finished second in giant slalom behind Warner Nickerson of Gilford, N.H., and was fifth in the slalom.
David Chodounsky of Crested Butte was 12th in the giant slalom and fourth in the slalom.
Super Series races are U.S. races on the NorAm Cup schedule, considered the highest level of ski racing competition below the FIS World Cup.
Powder Awards voting. The annual Powder Awards remain open to voters until Wednesday at . Known as the Academy Awards of ski film, the Powder video awards and readers’ poll recognize the year’s best performances and cinematography in ski films. The awards will be announced Jan. 26 in Aspen.
