CENTENNIAL — A semiautomatic rifle and a SWAT uniform were among the items stolen last weekend from an Adams County deputy’s personal vehicle.

The theft happened Saturday afternoon in western Centennial, said Arapahoe County sheriff’s Capt. Brice Moomaw. He would not name the SWAT deputy or the location of the theft.

Among the 11 items stolen were an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, ammunition for the rifle, a helmet, bulletproof vest, flashlight and uniform. The officer’s badge was not stolen.

Moomaw said the items were not in a trunk but inside the vehicle. Adams County sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Candi Baker said it was a sport utility vehicle. Baker said most of the items, including the rifle, were the personal property of the officer and not issued by the department.

Arapahoe County is investigating the crime, while Adams County is looking into the deputy’s actions.

“We not only expect but require officers to use appropriate care for their equipment,” Baker said. “But with personal property, it’s hard to dictate how people manage this.”
