BRIGHTON — The city is seeking to recoup $34,000 from a woman who falsely claimed she was raped, officials say.
The City Council instructed City Attorney Margaret Brubaker on Tuesday night to take legal action against Dawn Delay, who reported being raped in April 2006. The amount would cover police investigative costs.
“Unfortunately, there is no way to assess or collect the emotional damages she caused to our community,” Mayor pro tem Dick McLean said.
A 14-year-old girl told police she was attacked by three Latino men on April 10, 2006, while she was selling newspaper subscriptions at the Sugar Creek subdivision.
Five days later, Delay, then 34, told police she was raped and beaten by two Hispanic men and a white man not far from where the first attack allegedly occurred.
On Dec. 17, Delay acknowledged making a false claim, but she refused to apologize, claiming that police coerced her into admitting she lied, according to a news release.
