R. James “Jim” Nicholson, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, has joined Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck as senior counsel.
During his 2-1/2 years at the VA, Nicholson is credited with affecting reforms, including improvements to mental health care and creation of advisory committees to hear veterans concerns.
Nicholson, however, stepped down in October amid charges of shoddy outpatient treatment at the Pentagon-run Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well as at VA facilities.
Prior to his tenure at the VA, Nicholson served as U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See. He also served as chairman of the Republican National Committee for four years beginning in 1997.
“We are grateful for Jim’s many years of public service and we know that his tremendous experience in the public arena will make him a great new addition to our team,” said Norman Brownstein, chairman of the law firm.
Nicholson’s practice will include the areas of public policy, health care, international law, real estate and oil and gas.
“I’m enthused to join this prestigious Denver-based law firm,” Nicholson said.
