Local services have been set for a Longmont woman killed in Georgia earlier this month.

The family and friends of Meredith Emerson will hold a memorial Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Boulder, 1820 15th St.

Emerson disappeared while hiking on New Year’s Day with her dog, a black Labrador retriever mix named Ella. Her body was found Jan. 7.

A 61-year-old drifter, Gary Michael Hilton, has been arrested and officials say he admitted killing Emerson, then led them to her body.

Emerson had been living in Buford, Ga. Her parents are Susan and Dave Emerson of Longmont.

The family has set up a scholarship fund in Meredith’s memory. The Meredith Hope Emerson Memorial Award for Study Abroad will awarded for study in a French-speaking country.

Make checks payable to the Arch Foundation, in memory of Meredith Emerson. Mail to Suzi Wong (gifts officer for the Romance Languages department at the University of Georgia), c/o Franklin College, 124 Old College, Athens, GA 30602
