DENVER—Thousands of people marched about three miles in single-digit temperatures Monday to celebrate the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
As many as 6,000 people made the trek from City Park to the Civic Center, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. The marchers drank hot chocolate to keep warm and displayed banners showing support for Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The march began just before 10 a.m. when a torch was taken to the “I Have a Dream” memorial at City Park and ended before noon at the Civic Center in downtown Denver.
The festivities included choir performances, dancers and speeches. Among the speakers was Mayor John Hickenlooper who called those in attendance “administrators of democracy.”
This was Denver’s 23rd annual parade for the slain civil rights leader. Previous marches drew up to 30,000 people.
King’s birthday was declared a state holiday in 1984.
