Saturday. Is it possible to throw a play together in five days? For the touring directors of the Missoula Children’s Theatre, it’s not only possible, it’s a breeze. On Saturday the MCT presents its local production of “Robinson Crusoe” in Northglenn, the culmination of a process that began with auditions the previous Monday. It’s all in a week’s work for the MCT, which offers residencies with its directors across the country and overseas. MCT provides the costumes, sets and script, the host city provides the talent. MCT’s original adaptation of “Robinson Crusoe” stars local kids in a fun musical version of the classic adventure story. The “Robinson Crusoe” tour continues through Colorado in the coming weeks, with auditions in Pueblo on Jan. 28 and Parker on Feb. 18. 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. D.L. Parsons Theatre at the Northglenn Recreation Center, 11801 Community Center Drive; 303-450-8800. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students.
Saturday-Sunday. Get plenty of rest before heading to the Denver Kids Expo, running all weekend at the Denver Merchandise Mart. Almost every conceivable entertainment is available for the kids: an indoor train; sand art; face painting; tea parties. It’s a smorgasbord of kiddie good times. Don’t forget the “Diaper Derby” and magic show, too. For parents, there are speakers on various topics, including baby sign language, plus exhibitors offering ideas for everything from birthday parties to family dining. There’s a new-baby section this year, as well. Just try to keep the kids’ heads from spinning. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Denver Merchandise Mart, 451 E. 58th Ave.; 303-292-6278. Adults $9, seniors over 65 and kids under 12 are free.
Saturday-Sunday. With all the snow dumped on Colorado this winter, there was plenty of material to play with at the Budweiser Select International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge this week. On Saturday, judging begins after a week spent fashioning huge sculptures out of 20-ton blocks of snow. Teams from all over the world had five days to perfect their creations without using power tools, colorants or other extras. Now, everyone is welcome to check out the finished masterpieces and even vote for their favorites. The sculptures will stay up into February, if they don’t melt. All day Saturday and Sunday. Riverwalk Center, between Main Street and Park Avenue, Breckenridge. Free.
Tuesday-Wednesday. Sometime in junior high, being interested in band or orchestra becomes incredibly uncool in many teenage social circles. It’s unfortunate because lots of kids are fascinated by music and musical instruments, long before they start caring what others think of them. The Junior Symphony Guild targets these curious little ones at the annual series of Tiny Tots concerts, starting next week. The shows allow 3- to 6-year-olds to sit inside a circle of 30 musicians as they play familiar songs. Kids can dance and move around or just observe their favorite instruments up close. Monday’s shows are already sold out, but performances run through Feb. 7. 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Temple Sinai, 3509 S. Glencoe St.; 303-759-1827. 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Mile Hi Church, 9079 W. Alameda Ave.; 303-237-8851. Tickets are $5 each. To order, call 303-355-7855.
