DENVER—The state’s online voter registration database was taken down Wednesday after voters registered as Democrats and Republicans were listed as being unaffiliated.

Rich Coolidge, spokesman for the secretary of state’s office, said the problem was being fixed and the site should be available again Thursday.

Democratic legislative candidate Liz Adams of Denver said she discovered the problem after e-mailing the link to voters she was encouraging to attend the Feb. 5 caucuses. She asked them to check which precinct they were in but some reported back to her that they were wrongly listed as unaffiliated voters.

Only voters who are registered as Democrats or Republicans are allowed to participate in the caucuses.

“It is unacceptable to think that even one person may choose not to attend caucus based on the inaccurate information on the Secretary of State’s Web site,” Adams told the Rocky Mountain News.

Coolidge said the correct information is on file with county clerks. He said the problem occurred with information transferred from the counties to the database vendor, which mistakenly trimmed out the voter registration field and labeled all voters as unaffiliated.

The system will be tied into the new statewide database that will be used in this year’s elections. Once the system is complete, Coolidge said counties will be able enter the information directly into the database rather than have to transfer the information to the vendor.
