ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen-Pitkin County Airport officials are considering extending their runway by 800 to 1,000 feet.

The extension would allow departing planes to carry more passengers, baggage and fuel. Officials say it wouldn’t mean larger planes would use the airport.

Airport aviation director Jim Elwood said Tuesday the extension is not a done deal and probably would not be built for at least two years. The airport would have to study the environmental impacts before deciding whether to go ahead with the project.

Aspen-Pitkin County Airport is served by United Express, Northwest Airlink and America West. Officials say it’s the third-busiest airport in the state.
