A consultant has recommended Broomfield-based Level 3 Communications cut more than 1,000 positions to boost its bottom line, said Donna Jaegers, an equity analyst at Janco Partners in Denver.

But she said such an extreme move is unlikely.

Jaegers said she learned of the report through her contacts at the company.
reported Level 3 would announce the elimination of 1,100 positions, or 16 percent of its workforce, when it unveils earnings Thursday.

Level 3 Communications officials were unavailable for comment.

On Tuesday, in contrast to layoffs, the company had 173 job listings on its website.

Jaegers said such a large cut doesn’t make sense. Previous job cuts that went too deep have caused Level 3 to lose sales because it can’t hook up its new customers quickly enough to its network, she said.

Level 3 has cut more than 2,200 positions in the past two years as it consolidates several acquisitions.

Local economic-development and Labor Department officials said they were not aware of any pending job cuts at the company.

Staff writers Elizabeth Aguilera and Kimberly Johnson contributed to this report.
