GOLDEN, Colo.—A woman who authorities said shot her husband after learning the IRS would keep her refund to pay off a student loan has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Tamara Palumbo, 46, was found guilty last month of attempted murder and first-degree assault. She was sentenced Monday.

District Attorney spokeswoman Pam Russell said Palumbo shot her husband Steve with a .44 Magnum, hitting him in the arm and severing an artery. She then tried shooting him again but the gun misfired and he was able to escape.

The two were living together despite going through a divorce. Tamara Palumbo received a letter from the IRS then learned Palumbo had hired an attorney.
