ASUNCION, Paraguay — Health officials on Tuesday reported Paraguay’s first case of yellow fever in 34 years, saying they have begun a vaccination campaign in the rural province where a man was diagnosed with the disease.

The unidentified man is receiving treatment after the case was detected in San Pedro province, about 240 miles from the border with Brazil, public health official Gualberto Pinanez said.

The World Health Organization said an estimated 30,000 people worldwide die annually from the viral disease.
