How much should a homeowner expect to spend on a closet-organizing system, and is it a worthwhile investment?
With the current push to “get organized,” consumers are reaping the benefits of having myriad choices within the closet- customization industry. Whether you are looking for a basic do-it-yourself system from a home improvement store or a high-end, custom-designed closet, a multitude of companies have sprung up to satisfy the demand for more functional, beautiful closets. And savvy homeowners realize that details like custom closets can lead to a successful home sale.
For the do-it-yourselfer, quick and easy fixes such as adding shelves or shoe racks can typically be less than $100. Removing existing components yourself and redesigning a closet with off-the-shelf products can run in the hundreds of dollars, depending on the size of the closet. Many retail closet companies have online tools to help with basic layout choices.
For the homeowner looking for something a little more sophisticated, many local companies offer custom closets and will handle the entire process from design to installation. Custom closets can range anywhere from several hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars.
If you are planning on selling your home, a few well-placed additions to the basic closet system can add true value in the mind of a potential buyer. Our desire to become more organized really symbolizes our need to gain control of our lives, reduce stress and have more time for what we truly want to do. If customizing our closets enhances our quality of life, then it truly is an investment worth making.
