COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs jury is expected to begin its deliberations today in the murder trial of a man charged with killing a police detective.

Thirty-two-year-old Jereme Lamberth did not testify during his 16-day trial. The defense told a judge Tuesday that Lamberth would take the stand, but Lamberth balked as his public defenders prepared to call him.

Lamberth is charged with first-degree murder in the February 2006 death of 30-year-old Detective Jared Jensen. The officer was trying to arrest Lamberth on an attempted murder charge when Jensen was shot in the face.

The defense has said Jensen never identified himself as a police officer, and that Lamberth was trying to defend himself.

Lamberth faces life in prison without parole if convicted as charged.
