Darrell Scott, the nation’s top-rated high school running back, said today he has signed a letter of intent to play at Colorado.
The back out of Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure said during a college football show this morning that he picked the Buffs over Texas.
“Dan Hawkins has a vision and I want to be part of that vision,” Scott said on ESPNU.
Scott, who rushed for 2,443 yards and 33 touchdowns last fall, has talked about playing on the same team as his uncle, CU wide receiver Josh Smith. Scott mentioned the Buffs’ indoor facilities when asked about playing in the cold.Scott made his announcement from the ESPNZone in Anaheim, Calif., with family and friends in attendance.
“He’s a great fit for Colorado,” St. Bonaventure coach Todd Therrien said. “(CU running backs coach Darian) Hagan deserves the recruiter of the year award. Everyone was showing Darrell the love. You’ve got to go to the school that shows the love. CU gave him his first scholarship offer.”
Therrien said Scott wasn’t in school yesterday, but the recruit hinted to his coach that he was “80-20” for a decision, but wouldn’t say for where. His choice ended up to be Colorado.
The Buffs play Texas Oct. 4 in Boulder this season, then at Austin in 2009.
Hawkins’ news conference today is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Hawkins has up to 22 scholarships available this year.
Recruits started faxing letters of intent early this morning, which was the start of national signing day for college football.
