Make It Right, Colorado
Denver designer Kristi Dinner is getting behind the Make It Right Foundation, an organization founded by actor Brad Pitt to build affordable, sustainable homes in New Orleans’ storm-ravaged Lower 9th Ward. Dinner kick-started the effort to forge the “House That Colorado Built” with a $5,000 donation, and is now challenging other local architects, designers, builders and design lovers to help reach her goal of raising $150,000 for the house by March, which is when the American Society of Interior Designers meets in New Orleans. Visit to support “The House That Colorado Built.” From the home page, click on “Donations” and then “Team Sponsored Homes.”

Pop culture’s cupcake craze is in full effect, so the good people behind the indie boutique The Fabric Lab found ways to set their new bakery and cereal cafe apart from the myriad other cupcake outposts around town. The Shoppe at 3103 E. Colfax Ave. in Denver features a well-edited selection of art and design books and magazines, novelty gifts and late-night hours. It also has kitschy events, including “Project Runway” nights and cupcake decorating classes on Wednesdays, children’s storytelling on Saturday afternoons, and “Do-It-Your-Damn-Self” movie and DIY crafting events on Saturday nights. The Shoppe even has a resident DJ. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 2:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Details at or call 303-322-3969.
New kids on the block
Capsize Design is a new Baker neighborhood custom-furniture business founded by a circle of design-loving friends who simply refused to pursue the corporate job track after college. Their one-of-a-kind pieces are forged in wood, glass and steel, and range from $500 to $5,000. “Your home is a sacred place,” says lead designer and longtime woodworker Ben Olson. “How you furnish it is really an extension of you.” Read about the business and see pictures of the works at .
