GENESEE — Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers nabbed a suspected car thief today after he allegedly entered a home and attacked a couple, sending them to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police believe the suspect, who they declined to name pending a photo lineup, entered the couple’s home through an open garage door, struck the woman over the head with a golf club and fought the man who lived there.
Authorities have recovered the Cadillac Escalade the suspect allegedly stole earlier this morning and then ditched.
Police say before he attacked the couple, he had knocked on the door of a nearby house, but the owner didn’t recognize him and refused to open the door.
He then attacked the couple and fled on foot.
Using calls from other residents, police engaged the suspect in a lengthy foot chase and took him into custody a couple hours later.
He could face charges of attempted murder, first-degree burglary and aggravated motor-vehicle theft, according to police reports. The suspect also has a warrant in Florida for burglary.
