WEST VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Canadian star Steve Omischl won a World Cup freestyle ski aerials competition Sunday that was shortened because of thick fog and heavy falling snow at the 2010 Winter Olympics venue.
“It’s one of the longest competition days I’ve ever had,” said Omischl, who had 120.13 points for his fourth World Cup victory of the season. “We were hanging out with the adrenaline level, ready to go.”
Australia’s Jacqui Cooper won the women’s competition with 101.85 points.
Both the men’s and women’s aerials were reduced to a one-jump competition. Traditionally there is a one-jump qualification and a two-jump final.
Omischl led after the men’s qualification in the morning. It was over six hours later, after the women’s event, that officials decided not to have a second men’s jump because of fading light.
“We train to compete two jumps,” said Omischl, from North Bay, Ontario. “The Olympics is two jumps. I want to do my best two jumps and be on top. When it gets canceled like this it is unfortunate. I’m still proud of my first jump. Everyone is trying to win the first round. A win is a win. You’ve got to take it.”
A women’s mogul competition that originally had been scheduled for Saturday, but organizers had hoped to run Sunday, was scrubbed.
Thick fog forced the cancellation of the men’s moguls Saturday.
