PUEBLO — Prosecutors have filed charges against a high school teacher and four students after an assault that left a sophomore with a broken jaw and a few teeth knocked out. Pueblo West High physical education teacher and baseball coach Daniel R. Sanchez was charged with reckless endangerment and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

District Attorney Bill Thiebaut said he would not name the students or their charges because they’re juveniles. A summons filed in district court Tuesday said Sanchez was accused of encouraging two students to commit third-degree assault. Sanchez was accused of seeking retaliation after a freshman was hit in the head with a football Dec. 12, allegedly by two students accused of harassing the freshman for months.

The next day, the sophomore boy was assaulted at school, authorities said. Students accused of hitting the sophomore said they thought the sophomore had been harassing the freshman, according to sheriff’s office reports obtained by The Pueblo Chieftain. But the sophomore denied throwing the football, the newspaper reported.
