A woman in her 70s fell through ice today at a private pond in an Arvada residential neighborhood and died, officials say.

The woman went out for a walk with her dog and when the dog returned home without her, her husband called 911, said Susan Medina, Arvada police spokeswoman.

The dog was dry, so he had not fallen through the ice, but it is possible that the dog went out on the ice and, in an attempt to reach her pet, the woman fell through, Medina said.

The ice-rescue team of the Arvada Fire Protection District pulled the woman’s body out of the pond.

Authorities are canvassing the neighborhood in search of anyone who might have seen the woman before she fell into the water, Medina said.

The woman’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members, she said.
