FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Cherry Creeks girls swimming and diving team won four of the final five events Friday to wrap up the Class 5A state high school championships.
The Bruins finished the two-day meet at Edora Pool Ice Center with 349 points, 80 more than second-place Fairview. Regis (193 1/2), Boulder (150 1/2) and Mountain Vista (131) rounded out the top five teams.
Loran Brandon began Cherry Creeks strong finish with a win in the 500-yard freestyle race, the eighth of 12 events. She was timed in 5 minutes, 1.63 seconds.
The Bruins won the next event, the 200 freestyle relay. After Brightons Breann Fuller won the 100 backstroke in 7.17, the Bruins won the final two events, the 100 breaststroke (Christine Wixted, 1:06.49) and the 400 free relay.
In a surprise finish, Fort Collins Tricia Nelson and Chatfields Shelley Perkins tied in the 50 free. Both were timed in 24.17. Ramparts Jenna Gregoire was a hundredth of a second slower and took third.
Other individual winners were Lewis-Palmers Jackie Cromer in the 200 free (1:53.16), Smoky Hills Carolin Piehl in the 200 individual medley (2:07.16), Chaparrals Elizabeth Yovich in diving (479.10 points), Fairviews Lauren Rigg in the 100 butterfly (57.50) and Gregoire in the 100 free (52.03).
Boulder won the opening event, the 200 medley relay.
