Your clue was: “Based on a 1927 silent film banned by Stalin for its frank depiction of a romantic triangle – and for its defense of individual freedom in the face of repression.”

Our winner: Paul Page was first to recognize Nitzan Sitzer, Karen LaMoureaux and David Ambroson in “Bed and Sofa,” presented in March 2000 by Trouble Clef Theatre Company. “It was quite good,” says Paul.

“Bed and Sofa” is an opera based on a Russian silent film. Wrote Westword’s Jim Lillie: “That would seem the sort of artsy endeavor that invites dismissive sneers from musical and movie buffs alike. But with its abundance of artful understatement, a score that out-lilts most songfests and a touching story that examines age-old questions with modern frankness, ‘Bed and Sofa’ proves an enjoyable mixture of down-to-earth feeling, high-minded music and melodramatic fun.”

He called LaMoureaux “entrancing” as Ludmilla, an unfulfilled housewife. “She carries the drama over several rough spots.”

It was staged at what was then being called the New Nomad Theatre in Boulder.
