Highlights from the Legislature on Friday.
— The Senate gave initial approval to a bill allowing investigators to place a wiretap on a suspect’s telephone for up to four months if they get monthly approval from a judge. House Bill 1130 originally would have allowed authorities to ask for unlimited extensions. Republicans unsuccessfully tried to set the limit at a year, arguing that complex drug cases can take a long time to investigate.
— The House approved and sent to the governor a measure to tighten the rules for off-road vehicles despite objections that the state is taking away access to federal lands. House Bill 1069 would prohibit motor vehicles from using public lands, trails, or roads unless authorized by a sign or other means.
— Adolfo Perez Esquivel, the 1980 Nobel Peace Award winner, addressed senators after lawmakers passed a resolution honoring him and Colorado-based PeaceJam, which has been nominated for the prize.
