The Colorado Walleye Association will highlight the best reservoirs in the region at its All Eyes on Walleyes event March 16 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

A lineup of professional anglers, local tournament fishermen and Division of Wildlife biologists will discuss hot spots such as Carter, Chatfield, Cherry Creek, Glendo, Horsetooth, McConaughy, Pueblo and Trinidad reservoirs. There will also be a special emphasis on youth participation.

“Our aim is to educate and introduce youth anglers, young adults and parents to the sport of fishing through our organization, vendors, local outfitters and professional anglers,” CWF’s Barry Cundiff said.

In keeping with this theme, youths 15 and under will be admitted free, as will the adult who accompanies them. Other adults pay a $5 admission. The event will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The Jeffco facility is at the northwest corner of the West Sixth Avenue at Indiana Street intersection.

Forest fines hiked.

Miscreants who violate land-use rules on national forests in Colorado face elevated fines under a U.S. District Court ruling approving the first hike in the federal fine schedule in 15 years.

The updated schedule is consistent with fines in Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota.

For example, the assessment for operating a motor off designated roads now is $250.

Causing damage to a road or trail costs $300. Discharging fireworks or explosives costs $200; violating a fire ban costs $300.

Teachers for cranes.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife will join organizers of the Monte Vista Crane Festival in offering a teachers’ workshop 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.

The event will focus on the habits and migration of sandhill cranes that gather by the thousands near the San Luis Valley town on their path north. Cost is $10 and registration may be made at 970-375-6709.
