Getting your player ready...

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun opened spring football practice Tuesday with the idea that all positions are open. Junior Shea Smith of Odessa, Texas, who was Shaun Carney’s understudy during Air Force’s 9-4 season last fall, was penciled in as starting quarterback, but Calhoun stressed it wasn’t definite.

“There’s not a spot on our team where we have a starter right now,” Calhoun said. “We’re several weeks away before we get to that. The quarterback position is one of the most important issue this spring.”

Calhoun welcomed about 90 players, including eight starters from last season.

“We had too many players in red jerseys,” Calhoun said. “We had some good work today, but our players have to learn that if they’re going to play they have to practice.”
