MONTE VISTA, Colo.—Colorado’s version of California’s return of the swallows to San Juan Capistrano is now under way.

A festival in honor of the sandhill cranes’ migration north begins Friday in Monte Vista.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that more than 18,000 sandhill cranes are likely to pass through the area, with the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge being one of the best viewing spots.

The stubble of the small crops in the area attracts the birds, though they may have to use their long beaks to dig through heavy snow this year.
