Denver International Airport had a 74.6 percent on-time arrival rate in January, up from 68.8 percent in the same month a year ago.

The performance put Denver at No. 16 in a ranking of major airports, up from No. 26 in January 2007, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Baltimore/Washington International was the top-ranking airport for on-time arrivals in January with 80.4 percent of flights on time.

Among airlines, United ranked No. 20 for on-time arrival performance, with 62.1 percent of flights arriving on time in January, the lowest among the carriers ranked. Frontier ranked No. 8 in on-time arrival performance, with 76.4 percent of flights arriving on time. Southwest Airlines ranked No. 6, with 77.4 percent of flights arriving on time.

Frontier had the lowest rate of canceled flights with a 0.2 percent cancellation rate in January.

Overall, airlines’ on-time performance in January declined compared with a year earlier. For the 20 reporting carriers combined, 72.4 percent of flights arrived on time in January, down from 73.1 percent a year earlier.

Passengers also filed more complaints about airline service to the U.S. Department of Transportation, with 1,174 complaints in January, up 55.7 percent from the year-ago month.
