A fire that destroyed a vacant home in Greeley may have started in a rubbish heap outside the house.

Union Colony Fire/Rescue Authority reported flames shooting from the home at 918 B St. when they arrived on the scene at 11:15 a.m. today.

Much of the fire was extinguished quickly, but it continued to burn in pockets concealed in the walls and roof. Fire crews worked for several hours using power tools to reach the flames.

Preliminary estimates put the damage at $50,000.
