An 82-year-old New Mexico man died in a traffic accident in Weld County.

Bernard Ellis, of Albuquerque, was driving a 1997 Chrysler east on Weld County Road 20 when he “failed to stop” before entering a “blind intersection,” according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The Chrysler collided, at about 11:35 a.m. Monday, with a 2001 Volkswagon Jetta that was heading south on the I-25 frontage road.

Ellis was flown by helicopter to Denver Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. A passenger in his car, Dolores Ellis, 80, also of Albuquerque, was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland with “moderate” injuries, the state patrol said.

The driver of the Jetta, Chris Castaneda, 19, of Longmont, and a passenger in his car, Michael Borchert, 19, of Fort Lupton, were both taken to Longmont United Hospital with moderate injuries, the state patrol said.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing seat belts, the state patrol said.

The accident is under investigation. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected as contributing factors, the state patrol said.
