John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is in a statistical tie in matchups with Democratic opponents Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll.
Illinois Sen. Obama leads Arizona Sen. McCain 47 percent to 44 percent, the poll found, while New York Sen. Clinton led McCain 47 percent to 45 percent. The survey, conducted March 7-10, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
McCain outperformed his own party in the poll. When asked which party they preferred for the White House without a specific candidate in mind, those responding chose Democrats over Republicans 50 percent to 37 percent.
Among Democrats, Clinton leads Obama 47 percent to 43 perfect nationally, the poll found. In January, Clinton led by 16 percentage points.
