ASPEN, Colo.—A storm that brought more than a foot of new snow to the northwest Colorado mountains closed schools in Aspen and briefly halted bus service Friday, with city streets too slick to drive on.

Among ski areas, Winter Park reported 17 fresh inches of snow Friday, Breckenridge reported 16 inches and Vail 15.

Aspen Mountain reported 10 inches of new snow. The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority suspended in-town bus service and skier shuttle routes in Aspen about 11 a.m., but began putting buses back into service about a half-hour later, said Stan Redfern, RFTA transportation supervisor.

Buses were moving slowly.

“It’s an absolute and utter mess, is all I can say,” Redfern said.

Ice and snow also slowed travel for morning commuters and school buses near Colorado Springs.

Highway crews closed Interstate 70 over Vail Pass in the morning for avalanche control, while U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass was temporarily closed because of poor conditions.

At midday, a section of Colorado 134 through Routt County was closed due to multiple accidents and poor conditions.
