Now you can get a haircut in Denver — old school.
I saw workmen installing a barber pole outside Cigars on Sixth the other day. Proprietor Dan Dunne explains that he’s installed a barber chair in the back of the cozy cigar shop.
“I’m trying to clean up the community a little bit,” Dunne says.
It’s dubbed Clips on Sixth, and Tony Lacona (The Demon Barber of Sixth Street) cuts hair and straight shaves clients Wednesday-Monday. Hot lather, hot towels, a 30-minute process. And you can get the full treatment for $25 — while you smoke a cigar and watch basketball on a giant flat screen TV. If you were sitting by a window, you might think it was a set-up for a mob hit. But this is all good.
Girls!
Denver Center Attractions has started hyping “The Secret Comedy of Women,” which will open in the Garner Galleria Theatre on Sept. 18.
It’s a two-woman show that rocked the house when it played the Avenue Theatre. It’s very inside girlie, a sharing experience that only women could appreciate.
And that’s why producers want the room to fill up with women only. Men just aren’t welcome. I know this will kill you guys, but you’ll have to stay home and watch football when your wife goes to the theater for a Sunday matinee. Sorry, that’s just the way it is.
“We’re not inviting men, that’s for sure,” says producer Randy Weeks. “This is not male bashing, it’s just about girl things, diaries and clothing. It gives women a chance to go out with other women and enjoy themselves — and they don’t have to worry about dragging their husbands along.”
More girls!
Elway’s at the Ritz was hopping Thursday night with about 300 singles, mid-20s to mid-50s.
It’s a new group in town called Girls Night Out, organized by Reesa Ryder and Laura J. Roybal. They’ve been producing these soirees once a month since January, and they grow by 100 people every outing.
It’s a free deal, so maybe that’s why it’s so popular. “It’s a SNAP!” is their motto, which translates into “Social Networking for Adventurous People.”
GNO hosted a popular Down with Love Valentine’s Day party. Next up is an April 17 After Tax Affair (location TBA) and then an Ocho de Mayo party at Alto.
So how do you get to go? Write Ryder at Reesa@gno-girlsnightout.com and in a few weeks their website should be up at gno-girlsnightout.com. Have patience.
City spirit.
