DURANGO, Colo.—Thirteen students at Miller Middle School were sent home last week after a mysterious illness afflicted them. After an investigation by health officials the most likely culprit? Too much sugar and exercise.
San Juan Basin Health Department epidemiologist Joe Fowler said the children had just participated in Open Market Day Thursday, a quarterly event where students purchase food, games and crafts with fake money handed out for good behavior.
They began experiencing stomach aches, nausea and vomiting five minutes after eating. Fowler said food-borne pathogens typically take 30 minutes to cause a reaction.
At least one student admitted faking an illness to get an afternoon off.
