Friday-Sunday. The happy days of spring break are waning. Most kids head back to school Monday, if they haven’t already, but the Denver Art Museum is helping them cling to their last days of freedom. “The Best Spring Break Ever” ran all week at the museum and continues this weekend. Art-making activities abound throughout both museum buildings. Weave a Navajo blanket, sculpt a scary jungle bug or draw a cool animal: Opportunities are everywhere. Pick up a Family Backpack or Art Tube, too, and bring fun times into the galleries. On Saturday, help LEGO artist Duane Hess make a mosaic of one of the museum’s artworks. Or just mess around with the LEGOs and make art of your own. The extra incentive: Art fans under 18 are admitted free to the museum through Sunday and get half-price admission to the “Inspiring Impressionists” exhibit. “The Best Spring Break Ever” should tide you over, funwise, until summer vacation. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Denver Art Museum, 100 W. 14th Avenue Parkway. 720-865-5000. Kids 18 and younger are admitted to the museum free all weekend. Adults are $10 for Colorado residents and $13 for nonresidents. Senior and student discounts are available.
Saturday-Sunday. When warm weather returns, so do some of Colorado’s part-time residents. No fans of ski season, migratory birds fly along the Rockies during spring on their way to their summer homes. Welcome them to the neighborhood at the Migration Celebration at South Valley Park this weekend. Naturalists will be on hand to discuss the hows and whys of bird migration, including which birds stick around and which just use Colorado as a pit stop. Learn about the Swainson’s hawk, a unique raptor that travels thousands of miles every year between the western U.S. and its wintering grounds in South America. Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. South Valley Park, off the Ken Caryl exit from C-470. Head west on Ken Caryl and take a left at South Valley Road to access the park’s north parking lot. Free.
Saturday. Should you find yourself in the Vail Valley this weekend — lucky you — take a break from the ski scene with the Moiseev Ballet. For this year’s visit to the Vilar Performing Arts Center, the Russian company presents Tchaikovsky’s “The Sleeping Beauty.” This classic tale of good and evil premiered in 1890, and now it’s a standard in the ballet repertoire. Keep in mind, however, that despite its title, the full-length evening performance isn’t for little ones. 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Vilar Performing Arts Center, 68 Avondale Lane, Beaver Creek. $58. Call 888-920-2787.
Saturday. Kids won’t need a miner’s helmet and headlamp to learn about Earth’s inner workings at “Gee-ology” at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. The workshop lets kindergarten and first-grade youngsters build a volcano and start a rock collection that shows some of Earth’s component parts. Then they’ll pay a visit to the museum’s latest traveling exhibition, “Gold: Natural Treasure, Cultural Obsession,” to see one of geology’s most beautiful finds. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Room 303, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd. $50 for museum members, $60 for nonmembers. Scholarships are available. Please bring a sack lunch and a drink. Call 303-322-7009 to reserve a spot.
