There are nuances to second base that Jeff Baker is still learning, like footwork on double plays. But wherever he starts, he brings a dangerous bat. In his first- ever assignment at second, Baker went 1-for-4 Thursday, doubling off the base of the center-field wall in the fifth.

“I felt comfortable out there,” Baker said. “Nothing is ideal, but I made all the routine plays.”

Cleats to the fire

Albert Pujols escaped serious injury when Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins inadvertently stepped on his right hand in the first inning. Pujols raced back to the bag on a wild pitch and was nearly picked off as Atkins tagged him. “I didn’t know his hand was there (on the slide),” Atkins said. “It scraped it up pretty good.”
