DOUGLAS COUNTY — The Douglas County school district has been awarded a three-year, $997,162 federal grant for teacher training in American history.

The Essential Learnings for American History program will give a core group of teachers in Douglas County and Sheridan 2 school districts three years of professional development training in the content and teaching of American history.

They will also learn ways to serve as mentors to other teachers to help improve how history is taught.

The goal is to help teachers develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of American history as a subject within the core curriculum.
