Police continue to search for a Colorado Springs woman after her live-in boyfriend shot himself to death as officers came to her apartment looking for her, authorities say.
Bekime Elshani, 22, has been listed as missing since Monday, said Lt. Skip Arms, Colorado Springs police spokesman.
Officers went to Elshani’s apartment at 6228 Twin Oaks Drive on Monday after friends and family reported they were unable to reach her and were concerned for her welfare, Arms said.
As they arrived they heard a gunshot and later found the body of Elshani’s boyfriend, Daniel Dereer, 25, who had shot himself to death, he said.
“We’re investigating it as a missing person’s case until we find evidence otherwise,” Arms said. “The one person who would know best is dead.”
He acknowledged that the facts in the case raise the suspicion that she was killed.
But officers who investigated her apartment after Dereer killed himself have found no evidence that she was murdered or is dead, Arms said.
“It’s a mystery at this point,” he said.
Elshani was last seen early Saturday morning.
