ABINGDON, Va. — A student pilot whose two-seat Cessna 150 ran out of gas made an emergency landing Wednesday on an interstate in western Virginia.

Matthew Edward Scott, 27, of Blountville, Tenn., was on his way back to Abingdon’s airport on his first solo flight when his engine sputtered. He landed on Interstate 81 within site of the airport. Airport staff brought fuel to the disabled plane, which then taxied back to the airport. It sustained a dent when one of the wings clipped a mile marker sign.

No one was injured, and Scott will not face charges, police said.
