WASHINGTON — Taiwan has honored Rep. Tom Tancredo for his efforts on behalf of the island seeking recognition as an independent nation.

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian gave Tancredo a medal at a ceremony in Taiwan during the congressional recess in late March. Called the Order of the Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon, the civilian award is given for contributions to national and societal development.

Tancredo, a Littleton Republican, said he has been interested in Taiwan’s cause since his days in Colorado’s statehouse three decades ago.

While in Congress, Tancredo has worked on U.S-Taiwan relations. He recently urged the International Olympic Committee to let the island’s athletes compete separately in the 2008 Games in Beijing.

“I admire their courage,” Tancredo said of the Taiwanese.
